About this Item
A rare complete two-volume set of `Spring` and `Autumn` `Nanakusa Ko` by Kitano Shuho, on the history and origins of the seven famous edible wild herbs of spring: seri, (Oenanthe javanica), nazuna/penpengusa (Shepherd`s purse), hahakogusa (Cudweed), hakobe (Chickweed), konitabirako (Nipplewort), kabu (Turnip), and daikon (Radish), as well as the `Nanahana no Sekku` (`seven flowers of autumn` or `festival of seven flowers`), in which delicate, beautiful flowers provide visual enjoyment instead of being eaten. Seven-herb rice porridge (nanakusa-gayu) is traditionally eaten on January 7th in Japan, as part of the Festival of Seven Herbs, or `Nanakusa no Sekku`. The illustrators of the Autumn volume are unknown, but the illustrators of the Spring volume include Rankyo, Busei, Bunitsu, and other famous artists. Small, almost unnoticeable wormholing to the Autumn volume. Both books have been rebound, but the original title plate of `Autumn` preserved. The 3 l. foreword by Ota Kinjyo in `Spring` is hand-copied. Includes woodblock-printed illustrations of plants and flowers. Very occasional minor foxing. Ex-owner`s stamp and signature to verso of back cover of volume one. Marks on the covers where ex-ownership stamps have been removed. Includes non-original slipcase. For both texts to be available in a set is extremely rare. Text in Japanese. Includes some texts in Chinese-style Japanese (kanbun). Seller Inventory # 346
