Printed and published Meiji 18 (1885), Tokyo (No. 2 Minami Saegicho), Kobunsha, first edition, second printing, title on cover is in phonetic Japanese (transliterated) rather than translated into English, medium size for a Hasegawa/Kobunsha book, large 18mo (4 7/8 x 7 1/8 in - 12.4 x 18.2 cm), plain paper (not crepe) in double folded sheets, spine not covered, stab tied with cord, 18 pp - 9 double folded - (including covers). The front cover is nicely illustrated in color. The front cover is nicely illustrated in color. The back cover is blank. Internally there are 14 pages with color illustrations. Sensei Eitaku was the artist who created the illustrations. Translated from Japanese to English by David Thompson. The colophon indicates a printing date of August 17, Meiji 18 (1885) and a publication date of October the same year. I believe this to be a true first edition of this very early volume in the Fairy Tale series and the T. Hasegawa publishing enterprise. The first six books in the Fairy Tale series were all printed in August of 1885 and published shortly thereafter. ~~ Condition. The book is in Good condition. The front cover is lightly soiled and rubbed. The back cover is blank (as issued I believe). All corners are worn and lightly bumped. On the back there is wear on the corners and edges, some of which goes through to the next pages. Part of each string tie is missing. The back cover is split at fold and a couple of pages have significant splitting (ca 1/2) along the fold. Internally the book is clean.
