Uncorrected Proof in Proof D/W. A VG+ copy (some pale stains to the last few pages of the book) in the publisher s pale green wrappers marked Uncorrected Proof on the front cover and Billing & Sons Ltd., Guildford and London on the back cover. The wraps are in the usual Cape design with the Jonathan Cape logo(s) displayed prominently. In the VERY RARE PROOF D/W with PROOF ONLY Provisional publication date 21st October, 1963 on the rear flap. The Proof D/W is larger than the proof itself which has resulted in some creasing and rubbing to the top edge. The Proof D/W is important because it differs from the published D/W in many details. The proof design was judged to be too cluttered, rightly so in the opinion of [Raymond] Hawkey [the D/W designer], with too many items of ephemera beneath the skull on the front cover. The publisher s blurb on the rear cover is different, and the inside front flap carries a photograph of Len Deighton watching two Royal Navy frogmen demonstrating high-speed dressing at H.M.S.
