About this Item
FIRST COLLECTED EDITION circa 1854, 3 hand coloured children's books in 1 volume: Amusing Multiplication, Jacko's Merry Method of Learning the Pence Table, and The Child's First Music Book, or, gamut and time-table in verse. 8vo, 180 x 135 mm, 7 x 5½ inches, publisher's blind-stamped cloth, lettered gilt to upper cover and spine, (64) pages: (4), (1)-19, (1); (3)-21, (1); (6) 7-19, (1), each story with vignette on final blank. Jacko, story 2, seems to lack a leaf (pages 1-2), probably a half-title with a hand coloured illustration on verso as in Amusing Multiplication, Jacko's text begins on page 3 and is complete. Beautiful hand coloured frontispiece and hand coloured engraved general title page (3 little girls), plus 25 full page hand coloured illustrations. Amusing Multiplication: 7 full page illustrations (6 with 2 subjects), and 3 half page; Jacko: 7 full page illustrations; and The Child's First Music Book with its own hand coloured title page and 7 delightful illustrations. Expertly restitched, new endpapers, tiny chips to cloth at head and tail of spine, spine and lower cover slightly faded, slight soiling and fingermarking to margins, small ink spot in margin of 2 pairs of facing pages, 10 mm (½") brown stain on 1 text page, 4 lower margins have pale brown staining just extending into text, one 10 mm closed margin tear. A very good copy of an enchanting item (maybe lacking half-title to Jacko as noted). The frontispiece to the volume shows a tiny girl in party clothes standing before the piano, Jacko the monkey struggling with the pence table and 2 children playing stringed instruments. The Child's First Music Book is based on The Gamut and Time-Table in Verse by Charlotte Finch but the illustrations are completely new. See Gumuchian 1717 (an earlier version) and Osborne II,698. 3 copies in Copac. A copy of our book in Cotsen Children's Library has our pagination. Other copies of Jacko located are paginated as ours. Osborne II, 711 lists a copy of Dean's Jacko's Merry Method published in Grandpapa Easy's series (circa 1840) with 7 leaves and 8 hand coloured engravings.
