Large 8vo. v, 266p. Color frontispiece plus 11 full-page illustrations, 3 full color, 8 black and white plus many black and white drawings as head and tail pieces by Kurt Wiese. Decorative endpapers by Kurt Wiese. Black cloth with gilt letters on the front cover and the spine and with a vignette in gilt on the front cover of Ho-Ming standing with hands joined and a vignette in gilt on the spine of her seated. Just hints of wear to extremities, cloth clean, gilt bright, gifts inscription pasted to front pastedown, else fine with no internal markings. Dust jacket very slightly shelfworn and very lightly soiled. This is the story of a girl of ¿New China¿ who is caught in the nexus of conflicting traditions of her family and the new ideas in of a developing China. This book has a charming gift inscription as follows: ¿Queen¿s School | Westmount, Que. | Presented | by | The | Frances Willard Chapter | (W.C.T.U.) | to | Joan Parker¿June 14, 1940.¿ Elizabeth Foreman Lewis was the author of several books, including some also illustrated by Kurt Wiese and including YOUNG FU OF HE UPPER YANGTZE which won the Newberry Medal.
