About this Item
Glenn Brown. History of the United States Capitol. 2 volumes. 56th Congress, 1st session, 1900/1902, Senate Document 60. First edition; folio. Both volumes in full red cloth binding with gilt ornamentation and lettering on covers and spines. The name of Albert S. Burleson (1863-1937), a former Postmaster General and U.S. Representative fromTexas, is engraved on the front cover of the first volume. Both volumes contain numerous plates, including architectural photographs and plans, portraits, and historical prints and photographs. Condition: Good. Both volumes show fraying and rubbing to head and foot of spine, edges, and corners; general marking due to shelf wear; age-toning throughout; and some chipping to the edges of pages. Both bindings also have somewhat shaken bindings. Volume 1 has a crack after the first gathering and some water-staining on the left side of the top edge throughout, though this does not impact text or plates. Volume 2 has a four-inch tear to the cloth covering over one joint (the board is still fully attached from the inside) and a notable open tear over the author's name on the spine. There is some water staining to the cover, as well as to the upper left corner and the lower right corner throughout the volume which does not affect either text or plates. There are gutter cracks after the first gathering and before the last gathering. Dimensions 12.25 x 15.25 x 5 inches DG consignment. Albert Sidney Burleson (1863-1937) was a conservative Democrat and United States Postmaster General (1913-1921) and Representative (1899-1913). He is known for gaining cabinet support for instituting racial segregation in the US Post Office, which President Woodrow Wilson applied to other federal agencies. [wikipedia]. 1305342.
