CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Covers soiled and spotted with wear to edges and corners; spine end rubbed. Interior is clean and tight. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The "Irish Regiment" was established in September 1861 as a regiment, composed mainly of soldiers born in Ireland or first generation Irish Americans. It included many reenlisting soldiers mustered out of the early 3-month regiments. It was organized under Butler for the capture of New Orleans. They participated in the Battle for Baton Rouge and later its liberation. Following veteran furlough in the spring of 1864, the regiment served in Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. Their engagements included: Battle of Baton Rouge, First Battle of Deep Bottom, Battle of Opequon, Battle of Cedar Creek, and Battle of Fisher's Hill. A scarce Connecticut regimental history.
