1825. hardcover. First edition, original binding very worn and loose, ink signature on endpaper, some light foxing. Intended for the Public Functionary, Government Officer, Private Agent, Trader or Foreign Sojourner in British India and the Adjacent Parts of Asia immediately connected with the honourable East India Company, being a digest of the work of the late Capt. Williamson, with many improvements and Aaditions; embracing the most valuable parts of similar publications, literature, officiaal duties, and social economy of life and conduct in that interesting quarter of the world. John Borthwick Gilchrist (1759-1841) was a Scottish surgeon, philologist, linguist and indologist who spent most of his early life in India where he made a study of local languages. he is principally known for his study of the Hindustani Language. When he arrived in Bombay in 1782 he joined the East India Company's Medical Service. It was on his suggestion that the Governor General, The Marquess of Wellesley and the East India Company set up what was to become Fort William College, a training institution for the company's recruits to India. He became the principal there until 1804 when he traveelled back to Scotland. Because of ill health, he never returned to India. He moved to Lodon in 1817 as a lecturer in Oriental Languages for the East India Company. For health reasons, he moved to Paris in 1831 and died there 10 years later. . . . .
