4to. (26 cm.) xvii, 1-232p. Frontispiece large black and white photo of Alexander Winchell, one of the co-founders of the Society, plus 16 other full-page black and white photos of persons prominent in the Society's history, including the author of this work, Herman LeRoy Fairchild. Brown lapping wrappers printed in black on the front wrapper. Just touches of wear to extremities, spine very slightly faded, textblock ever so slightly canted, wrappers clean and bright, most pages uncut (!),else near fine to fine with no internal markings. Herman Le Roy Fairchild (1850 ? 1943) was an American educator and geologist. An alumnus of Cornell University (1874), he taught at the University of Rochester for many years and founded the geology department there. He co-founded the Geological Society of America, served as its Secretary from 1891 to 1906 and President from 1912 to 1913. Obviously he was the one to write the early history of the Society!.
