About this Item
Praed, Mrs. Campbell. Fugitive Anne. New York: R. F. Fenno & Company, 1904. First U.S. edition, later Fenno issue using same sheets as the New Amsterdam Book Company edition of 1903 (ads for New Amsterdam titles will be found at rear of this issue), with cancel title leaf tipped in. Octavo, pp. [1-4] 5 [6-8] 7-427 [428] [429-432: publisher's ads] [note: the duplicated pagination of 7 and 8 is due to the insertion of a leaf with illustration credits at (7-8), evidently not present in the original issue]. Original maroon pictorial cloth, front panel stamped in white and black, spine stamped in blind, title page printed in black and red. Illustrated with five inserted plates in full color by Clare Angell. Thin strip of damp staining at bottom of front cover, negligible loss to the delicate white stamping on the front, else a bright, nearly fine copy of this handsomely designed book. #476. $150. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, II, p. 158 (describing this edition and issue). Bleiler (1978), p. 161. Lost race novel set in Australia featuring a giant tortoise, with good local color of the Australian outback. The New Amsterdam issue is much scarcer than this later issue and seems to be scarcer even than the John Long first UK edition of 1902 (which did not carry any illustrations). Seller Inventory # 476
