About this Item
First edition, xx, 396 pp, black & white plates and a folding table, original green cloth lettered in gilt, rubbed on spine. Presentation copy from the author to H.G. Wells, with inscription on half-title, dated 1909. Sir Basil Home Thomson (1861-1939) was a colonial administrator, prison governor, and head of the Metropolitan Police during the first World War, during which time he was involved in interrogating and arresting wartime spies including Mata Hari and Sir Roger Casement. He had been a stipendiary magistrate in Fiji from 1884. The author quotes Wells in the introduction to this work - "It is difficult to choose terms that even approach scientific accuracy in these generalizations, for, as Mr. H.G. Wells has remarked, if we use the word 'civilized' the London 'Hooligan' and the 'Bowery tough' immediately occur to us; if the terms 'stagnant' or 'progressive,' how are the Parsee gentleman and the Sussex farm labourer to be classed?".
