About this Item
8 page pamphlet. As published, no binding, paperback. Condition good, clean. Edge nicks to front/1st page, very minor ageing. Charles Bradlaugh (1833 1891) was an English political activist and atheist. He founded the National Secular Society in 1866. Elected as the Liberal MP for Northampton 1880. He was prosecuted by the British Government for blasphemy and sedition. Eventually acquitted, but fierce controversy continued both in the courts and in the press. Bradlaugh and Besant were both tried in 1877 of obscenity for publishing a pamphlet advocating birth control even though Charles Darwin refused to give evidence in their defence, found guilty with heavy fines and imprisonment, but again their conviction was overturned on Appeal. Elected as the Liberal MP for Northampton 1880 where he caused more havoc. Postal/shipping charges will be reduced. At time of listing found no other original copy for sale, just modern reprints. So very rare. Size: 13 x 18cm Approx. Seller Inventory # 002481
