About this Item
(1957). Near Fine in a Very Good dustjacket. Bound in black cloth with a yellow cloth backstrip. The spine is stamped in black. Octavo. 246pps. Stated First Edition. There is mild bumping to the lower tips and the spine-ends and there are a few faint specks atop the textblock, otherwise clean, tight, square, and bright. No previous ownership markings. The dustjacket, glossy in a mylar sleeve, is rubbed -- particularly along the folds -- and has modest wear with attendant creasing at the extremities; there is very little of the usual fading of the spine. The original price is intact. A nice copy of the author's second novel. ".'The Feast of Lupercal,' set in contemporary Belfast, is an exciting, readable, and profoundly moving narrative of human love and human inadequacy. Diarmuid Devine was a guilty prisoner of his own emotions and yearnings. At thirty-seven, settled in his ways, painfully shy and inhibited, he met a young girl who seemed to like him. Una Clarke, niece of a fellow instructor at a Catholic boys' school in Belfast, was warm, honest, and impulsive. But hadn't Dev heard that she was a Protestant, 'fast,' that she had been involved with a married man in Dublin? Yet Dev felt a door had opened for him. Una helped him: she asked if she might join his drama group, and Dev gratefully arranged it. In fact, he privately coached her after the others had gone, and his admiration for Una grew into something deeper. But, as it did so, and as Una and Dev were seen together more frequently, cruel gossip began to spread. Dev's fear of 'talk' led him into one agonizing mistake after another. The Feast of Lupercal was an expiatory Roman festival, celebrating the god of fertility. Although many will find in this novel an indictment of the sterility of life in Ireland, it is the figure of Diarmuid Devine that will evoke in most readers a deep human response. Brian Moore's profound compassion and his masterly style in storytelling show us, through the tragicomic figure of Dev, how much warmth and love the world can offer us -- if we are only brave enough to accept."
