About this Item
New York: Scribners, 1948. First Edition. Fine decorative cloth, in edge-chipped colorful pictorial dustwrapper. The central character, Armes, was raised by a swaggering bandit, and lived some part of his youth in an Indian village ruled by a half-white Indian, before coming out of the wilderness with fantastic skills, strange education, and eagerness to participate in battles. A highly original and well-researched novel set in the early 1800s when Florida was dominated by outlaws, Indians, escaped slaves, gougers from Georgia, and decadent Spaniards. A common book if lacking dustwrapper, but scarce with dustwrapper intact. The author is better remembered for his detective novel "Odor of Violets" aka "Eyes of the Night" (1941) about a blind detective, and adapted to two movies as well as being the source of the tv series "Longstreet." Kendrick was a key founder of Mystery Writers of America and held the organizations very first membership card. Seller Inventory # 5678
