About this Item
First edition 1st printing, Fine minus, unread book that is lightly crimped at top of spine, in a Fine minus jacket with a very light scratch and slight rubbing to back panel. This was a cheaply produced book and is fairly scarce in such nice condition. This novel was originally thought to be Carter s autobiographically story of being an orphan raised by his Cherokee Indian grandparents. Carter claimed to be part Cherokee and was thought to be a cowboy drifter. However, he fooled his publisher and most of his readers with his fictional account. Carter was actually living a double life and had been an avid segregationist and a speech writer for Alabama Governor George Wallace. The 1992 story, The Real Education of Little Tree (published in Texas Monthly), covers the history of Carter (who was actually Asa Earl Carter) and his fake autobiography a fascinating story that is stranger than fiction.
