About this Item
1933. First edition. xix, 443pp., a frontispiece portrait of Robert Cunningham and 17 black and white illustrations. Top edge gilt. "The Edinburgh Institution for Languages and Mathematics" was founded in 1832 by the Rev. Robert Cunningham in George Street but soon moved to Hill Street in the centre of Edinburgh with a teaching emphasis on modern subjects, such as science, rather than classical subjects, unusual at that time. It moved to Queen Street, which was purchased in 1853, and then to Melville Street in the city's West End in 1920. The name was changed to Melville College in 1936 and is now known as Stewart's Melville College, following the merger of Daniel Stewart's College and Melville College in 1972. This volume is a centenary history of the School, and includes a Roll of Honour of those who were killed or died during the First World War, a register of former pupils, and various other lists. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and gold titling with the School emblem on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with light shelf wear on the boards and fading to the spine. The spine ends are bumped. The contents are tight and clean with no inscripiton. PLEASE NOTE: This is a fairly heavy book and so extra postage may be required for delivery outside the UK. Seller Inventory # gEdin02
