About this Item
Small folio. Original decorative paper over boards, cloth spine, printed in red and black. Some modest wear; overall, a very good copy. Third edition of this extremely important, enigmatic Russian poem pertaining to the revolution, a work which resulted in Blok being ostracized by many of his contemporaries. The first edition consisted of 300 copies only, and the second edition is also rare (not in MOMA). MoMA 171. The long poem describes the march of twelve Bolshevik soldiers (likened to the Twelve Apostles of Christ) through the streets of revolutionary Petrograd, with a fierce winter blizzard raging around them. It exhibits "mood-creating sounds, polyphonic rhythms, and harsh, slangy language" (Encyclopedia Britannica). Seller Inventory # D11304
