About this Item
First UK Edition. Publisher's brown boards with gilt lettering to the spine. Some foxing to the page block edges otherwise a bright and clean near fine copy in the VERY RARE fragile dustwrapper priced 6s net to the inside flap (as called for). The dustwrapper has just a hint of creasing at the head and tail of the spine. Published by the Author after a series of talks on BBC radio about the field of archaeology, excavation and digging. Woolley argues that what is really important is, not what is found but, the methods used to find it. The Author was well-known at the time for being a colleague of T E Lawrence and for a report that they co-authored that was eventually published as: "The Wilderness of Zin". Sir Charles Leonard Woolley was a British archaeologist best known for his excavations at Ur in Mesopotamia. He is considered to have been one of the first "modern" archaeologists, and was knighted in 1935 for his contributions to the discipline of archaeology. "This is a fascinating and gorgeously-written book, written as a popular history of archaeology's methods and aims as a field. Woolley was a prominent figure in inter-war archaeology (present at the dig of Ur) and speaks with an unmistakable and endearing enthusiasm for his subject" (GoodReads). Photographs/scans available upon request. Seller Inventory # 355490722802
