8vo, full leather binding, rebacked, gilt spine, xii, 627, (1), 7 folding plates. Definitely in very good condition, its only faults being some rubbing at the back cover and the rebacking. Bookplate of Mr. Grasset and an old bookshop sticker at first end paper. First edition of the first dictionary of the "Marine de la Republique Francaise" (French Navy), written 'for the young citizens who choose to serve on the sea'. This work is structured like a real dictionary, detailing naval terms in alphabetical order. Author Nicolas-Charles Romme (1785-1805) was a geometer and a professor of mathematics and hydrography at Rochefort, disciple of Lalande and correspondent of the famous Academie des Sciences. He was also author of other books on similar subjects, including a dictionary of the English Navy (1804). Seller Inventory # 035070
