An important dictionary. "Published by Owen Manning five years after Edward Lye's death in 1767, the Dictionarium Saxonico- et Gothico-Latinum was a milestone in Old English lexicography, particularly for its inclusion of Old English poetic vocabulary. Indeed, it forms an important link between earlier lexicons and Bosworth's 1838 A Dictionary of the Anglo-Saxon Language, on which the latter is chiefly based." - Dabney A. Bankert. Samuel Johnson appears as a subscriber in the list in Volume I. Chippendale style armorial bookplate on each front pastedown endpaper of John Towneley (1731 1813) of Corney House, Chiswick, a noted book collector. The set appears as lot 1672 in the Towneley Library sale catalogue (Sotheby's, 18-26 June 1883). A mildly ex-library copy with barcode stickers on the front free endpapers and stamps on the versos of the title-pages, but without other library marks. Leather scraped and worn and powdering at edges so in need of stabilization, moderate foxing to first 3 leaves of Volume I and some edge-loss to prelims, some age-toning and occasional minor marks but generally a Good clean copy internally and the binding remains firm.
