1964. First edition. [xi], 243pp., a map on the endpapers, and black and white chapter header illustrations. Charles Pocklington Chenevix Trench (1914-2003) was a British Indian army officer, popular historian and writer. He became district commissioner of the Northern Frontier District of Kenya and then in Nanyuki. He learned Swahili and Somali and was seconded to Nairobi to help cope with the Mau Mau Emergency. In this book he describes his career in Kenya and the people he worked with. The book is bound in the original maroon boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the top of the spine and slightly heavier bumping to the bottom of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with some foxing to the endpapers. There is also foxing on the fore edge of the text block and on some pages this has seeped a little way into the fore margin. A name has been written on the front free endpaper. The clipped dustwrapper has shelf wear and some soiling and the spine ends and corners are bumped and nicked.
