About this Item
1922. First edition. 455pp. B&W frontspiece portait. Narciso Gener Gonzales (1858-1903) was a newspaper editor, born in Eddingsville, Edisto Island, South Carolina. He and his brother, Ambrose E. Gonzales, were the founders of The State newspaper in the state capital, Columbia. Gonzales was the son of Colonel Ambrosio José Gonzales and Harriet Rutledge Elliott. His father was a Colonel in the Confederate Army who played an instrumental role in the defenses of South Carolina during the American Civil War. Prior to this his father was a Cuban revolutionary leader with Venezuelan general Narciso Lopez, who opposed oppressive Spanish rule in four failed expeditions. The volume for sale, with a foreword by his borther, collects his reporting on the Cuban war of independence. It includes a large section on life in the Confederacy and about their father. The book is bound in the original dark blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the front board and spine. This is an ex-library copy but has few library indications and is otherwise in very good condition. There is shelf wear with some small staining on the boards and the spine ends are bumped. There are traces of a removed label or reference number together with some staining near the bottom of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with few librawry marks other than some stamps and labels on the endpapers and traces of a removed pocket on the rear fized endpaper. There is a circular stamp and 'pin-hole' library stamp on the title page and circular stamp on the last page of text. Seller Inventory # Caribbean013
