FIRST EDITION 1903. 24mo, 125 x 80 mm, 5 x 3 inches, maroon striped buff cloth, (a less common variant cloth for this series), 95 pages. 24 wonderful colour plates by Ruth Cobb each showing a different type of doll (5 are black dolls). Each faces a page of verse. Spine just very slightly darkened, very slight wear to head and tail of spine, small crease to top corner of 3 prelim pages including title page, small neat repair to top corner of Dumpy Books list page facing title page, no loss of text. Bright very good plus copy. The dolls include: St. Nicholas (Father Christmas); Uncle Jujuba 'Who has a sweet tooth;/He used to eat sugar-/Cane oft in his youth,/In South Carolina…'; Punch; The Cowboy; Blackman the Giant; Policeman; Dinah 'Dinah's cheeks are black as coal…'; Little Yam Mango 'being so lazy,/He's grown very stout…'; Brownie 'There is a brown dolly/Who has a guitar…'.
