About this Item
First edition, first printing. It is estimated that only 5,000 copies of this first edition were produced. The jacket art, used exclusively for this first edition, is from a self-portrait painting by the author. Largely considered a literary masterpiece, this novel features a professor, a student and another professor he has affairs with, and contains philosophical reflections, academia satire, good vs evil, hate vs love, and more. Quite an elusive hardcover in dust jacket. Nicely preserved. Corner tips lightly bumped, a touch of rubbing to the lower spine edge, else near fine in black cloth with gilt embossed titles to the front cover and to the spine, smoke-black end-papers; in a very good dust jacket with a minute surface snag to the front panel, short shelf-edge tears; nicks, creases, and rubbing to the upper and lower spine ends and corner tips; original printed $15.95 price still intact to the front inner flap. Octavo; 704 pages. Seller Inventory # ABE-1711575348017
