The books are chiefly from the Metropolitan Library, London, a reading room founded by Darling in 1840 which failed finacially. .From the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography . "His first volume, Authors (1854) [note-not present here], provided names, biographical notes, principal titles, and sometimes review notices of all major theological authors; volume 2, Subjects (1859), gave an account of works about the scriptures, arranging commentaries and even published sermons by book, chapter, and verse." A projected third volume, General subjects in theology', was never published.
