First edition of this translation of Franklin's correspondance, accomplished by a skilled French politician who rose in post-Revolutionary France and was much-inspired by the American Revolution and Franklin in particular. 12mo. Two volumes. Quarter dark green leather with 5 compartments, decoration in gilt, top edge gilt, marble boards, marble endpapers, all edges trimmed, stained and speckled. Volume I encompasses letters from 1757-1755, most of which time Franklin spent in England. Volume II goes from 1755-1790; most letters from this period originated in France. In the prefaces to both volumes Laboulaye describes the relationship, founded in liberty, between France and America. It is most interesting that he originated the idea of creating a Statue of Liberty, later realized by the sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, Volume I has light edgewear to extremities; Volume II shallow chipping top of spine, light edgewear, one corner rubbed. Hinges are sound. No previous owner name. A few foxing spots in prelims and very occasionally on pages. Very good. Seller Inventory # 014736
