About this Item
Oblong Quarto. 196p. Photographs By Ethan Hoffman; Foreword By Tom Wicker. One of the seminal works on life inside a prison where the photographer Ethan Hoffman and the writer John McCoy were allowed to live for four months inside Walla Walla prison. The Washington State Penitentiary had pioneered reforms to allow prisoners some training and help for their eventual release outside. They had access to maximum security, were present at prison disturbances, and dealt with the snitch as well as the prisoner type who not only preyed on those outside the prison but their fellow prisoners. For some this has become a disturbing view of those in prison, others have concluded this is one of the most authoritative works for those who consider the life of those in the American prison. A fine copy without the wear that is common in most copies. Bound in light brown cloth, spine lettering black with silver rules. A near fine copy in near fine pictorial dust jacket.
