About this Item
Contemporary paneled calf. 8vo. xii, 399, 16pp. Illustrated with four engraved plates on two leaves. First English edition. Lorenz Heister was a German surgeon, anatomist and botanist known as the "Father of German Surgery". This is a translation of his 1718 book "Compendium Anatomicum" which became the main anatomical and surgical textbook in Europe during the 18th century. Heister served as an army surgeon in a number of campaigns and eventually became the professor of anatomy and surgery at Altdorf University. He is credited for coining the word "tracheotomy", and was the first physician to perform a post-mortem section of appendicitis. A good copy with some scuffing and edgewear to the binding. The spine tips are worn and the front cover hinge is starting to detach at the top but the binding is still firm. The text is good with some scattered foxing and wear, occasionally heavy. The front fly, title and preface page are lightly chipped at the right side and the title and first preface page have the early ink ownership signature of Thomas Tillinghast at the top.
