Sir William Goodenough Hayter (1906-95) was a British diplomat, Ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1953 to 1957, and Warden of New College, Oxford from 1958 to 1976. Diana Trilling's husband, the writer, critic and teacher Lionel Trilling, was Visiting Professor at Oxford from 1963 to 1965, which gives context to the couple's friendship with Sir William Hayter and his wife Iris.
