About this Item
1st edition, 2nd printing, November 1959 (1st printing also November, 1959). Laurie Lee's well-loved first volume of autobiography. [This 1st edition includes on p. 272 the now (in)famous brief account of a so-called fire at a piano works. This was replaced in later editions, following concerns about possible libel action, with a reference to a fire at a boiler works]. 280 pages printed and bound on light green, cloth boards. Silver, gilt titles to spine. Black & white drawings by John Ward. Condition notes as follows: fade line to top & bottom of boards and to spine. Light 'rubs' to top and bottom of spine and one or two age-related marks to boards. Very light fox-marks to front end papers (inside front board f.e.p. has been glued down for no apparent reason). Heavier fox-marks to rear end papers. Very light spots to pages 46, 47, 48, 227, 228, 229. Pages 234-235 have a rectangular mark down the middle of the two pages (possibly from a former book-mark?) and small 'wrinkles' to the top of the pages. Small 'wrinkles' also appear to the top of pages 236-240. Otherwise, this is a very clean and tidy copy, in VGC, with a tight binding. With price-clipped, colour dust-jacket (design by John Ward). The jacket is deemed to be in overall Good+ condition - minor tears and rubs to top & bottom of spine and additional rubs to jacket edges - protected in a clear, mylor cover. 8vo.
