The stories are set in the fictional town of Golden Friars, which is based on Le Fanu's hometown of Abingdon, Oxfordshire. Told from the perspective of a local historian, who recounts the events of the past in a series of interconnected narratives, the stories are full of suspense, mystery, and supernatural elements, and offer a glimpse into the lives of the people who lived in Golden Friars in the 17th and 18th centuries.
