Illustrated with black and white reproductions of photographs and drawings of fireplaces and their design and ornamentation. Frontispiece of fireplace by Grinling Gibbons for Hampton Court Palace, protected by glassine. Covers designs from Romanesque and Early Gothic to the early twentieth century.
