About this Item
"The Chess Player's Chronicle, founded by Howard Staunton and extant from 1841-56 and 1859-62, was the world's first successful English-language magazine devoted exclusively to chess. Various unrelated but identically or similarly named publications were published until 1902." 420 pages including an index. Three quarter leather covers in Good to Very Good condition. Spine beginning to separate and peel away towards the top edge along the gutter. Front hinge beginning to separate but still holding fairly well. Scuffing to the front and back to the marbled boards. Previous owner's large book plate to the inside front cover over a previous book dealer's stamp and a removed book plate from the first free page, resulting in paper pulls and a couple of holes. Heavy wear to the edges and corner tips. Moderate foxing to the first and last several pages. A few random spots to the interior as well as several penciled marks and checks to the first section. A book of chess problems played by the masters of the era. Contents include; Chess in The Provinces, Unpublished Games of La Bourdonnais and M'Donnel, Chess In India, Chess In America, Chess In France, Chess In Germany, Match Between MM, Horwitz and Harrwitz, Chess Play In Vienna (by M. Von Heydebrant, U.D.L.). Also includes; Problems for Young Players and Solutions. Would make a fine addition to any chess library or collection. Paypal always welcome.
