Cloth, 4to, 29 cm, 126 pp, colour plates. From the blurb - "-Originating in northern China, over many centuries the Yao people migrated to southwestern China, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. Today, they are divided into several subgroups, each of them speaking various Miao-Yao languages, but continue to write their texts in the Chinese language with Chinese characters. To a large intent, they have maintained traditional Chinese social values and the Daoist religion. This unique catalogue gives a short description of 37 Yao texts written in Chinese (36 manuscripts and one block print). All the texts were purchased in northern Thailand in 1970. The texts deal mainly with traditional Chinese religion and social life. Dating from 18th to the first half of the 20th century, the manuscripts include Chinese characters special to the Yao. They also show Yao characteristics in binding and layout. In line with other volumes in the COMDC series, the catalogue is designed especially as an essential source of reference for scholars working in all aspects of manuscript studies.
