Cloth, large 4to, xi, 540 pp. The second of the five volumes comprising the catalogue of printed books of the Wellcome Historical Medical Library, the greatest library in its field. From the introduction - "The first volume of this Catalogue, published in 1962, contained entries for all books in the Library printed before 1641. The remainder of the Catalogue, comprising entries for books printed from 1641 onwards, up to and including 1850, will be issued as a single alphabetical sequence. This volume is the first part of the sequence and contains entries beginning with the letters A-E, a section which includes about 18,000 items. Although some familiar names - Aristotle, Galen, Hippocrates - will be seen again in this part of the Catalogue, for they remain of perennial interest to physicians and biologists, others now appear of greater significance - Addison, Auenbrugger, Bright, Corvisart. and many others who must be regarded as the founders of modem medicine. These one would expect to find in a library of the history of medicine and their works are usually to be found here in their entirety in the first and subsequent editions. They rise above a host of lesser works which are still of interest or even importance when research is undertaken into specialized topics. It is surprising, for instance, to see a little book printed in Malacca in 1829 urging the use of the stethoscope at a time when it was still a dubiously regarded novelty in many European hospitals. Its author, William Conwell, submitted a thesis at the university of Paris in 1824 and may well have seen Laennec demonstrate his new instrument personally." Very Good. Seller Inventory # ABE-27452
