Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of the author, Henry Jones. Dedicated to Edward Foster, a fellow card game historian. Hargrave 401. Jessup 957. Hargrave calls Henry Jones a "whist authority". The book here contains the history of cards and card-games, an essay on the morality of playing these games, and the political history of cards and gambling. Jones began using the pseudonym "Cavendish" in 1862 and equaled Hoyle in his books' popularity. Jones was and remains a respected authority on card history.
