Plenty has been written and said about China of late. I do not claim that the books detailed on page 80 are the best - I only say that they are the ones I have enjoyed myself. Neither do I make any great claims for this outline of the life of a man who is admittedly a military genius, but who is also beginning to be recognised as a great statesman. It is no more than an attempt to set out clearly the facts of his career, and in so doing, perhaps, to correct some misapprehensions. It is unfortunate that a number of sincere and attractively written books by writers of communist sympathies, present one side of the conflict with Chinese communists in which the Gereralissimo is shown in a highly unfavourable light. These books have been widely read, but they distort the facts through ignorance of the real character of the Generalissimo and his story. ***It should be recognized that Chiang Kai-shek is not and never has been a mere 'war-lord', and that the circumstances in which he found himself, and the views he held on the destiny and needs of China, compelled him to take the line he did. (Quote taken from the preface by the author). ***Scarce first impression of the true first edition of this fragile book, published during the Second World War, and printed on thin war economy standard paper - with the original illustrated boards in nice clean, unfaded collectable condition. ***Of interest to scholars and collectors of rare first edition titles on the history of China.***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # 2861
