Original Grey Cloth Hardback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 1922. First edition. 272 pp, a frontispiece portrait of the author and 9 maps. Brigadier-General Hanway Robert Cumming DSO (1867-1921) was an officer in the British Army. He fought in the Second Boer War, and in France during the First World War. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in 1917 and appointed an Officer in the French Légion d'Honneur. During the Irish War of Independence, he was commander of British troops in County Kerry. He was killed at the Clonbanin Ambush, possibly the highest-ranking British officer to be killed in that war. This book consists of a narrative left by him describing the doings of the brigades he commanded at different times on the Western Front, 1917-1918. It includes chapters on the commencement of the German retreat, 1917; the German offensive, march 1918; the fourth Battle of Ypres, April 1918; and the counter-offensive of August-November, 1918. The book is bound in the original grey cloth covered boards with blue titling on the spine and front board. Ther case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean apart from some scattered foxing. The foxing is mostly light although the first few pages, including the half-title and title pages, and a few others elsewhere within the book, are more heavily affected. Seller Inventory # WWI157
