First edition hardcover SIGNED by author on verso half-title page 'with best wishes, John Calvin Starr'. Black cloth covered boards with silver titles and horse head drawing on frt cover shows two small marks on cloth, spine ends bumped, tips still sharp. Illustrated endpapers, no other names, writing, tears or soil seen in the 214pp text. Unclipped illustrated dust jacket is a professional reproduction that is complete and displays well in new mylar. The story of an amazingly bright mare from Cross Bayou country in Florida who grew up with the young boy in the story, but it wasn't until later in life that Dinah's unusual intelligence, intuition and strength, she found a wife for her owner, she served him daily in the cultivation of his first citrus grove, together they endured the terrors of a Florida hurricane, and her last heroic act was to save the life of his small daughter.
