About this Item
Limited edition of 150 Large Paper copies. Cloth, large 4to. 143, [82], xxi, [4] pp, .2 facs, 4 colour plates. 76 entries. Based on a paper read before the Bibliographical Society, London, May 21, 1894. Illustrated with many reproductions of title-pages. The "Eikon Basilike: the Portraiture of his Sacred Majestie in His Solitudes and Sufferings" was written in 1648-9 and was long attributed to King Charles I : the Cambridge History of English Literature observes that "It is almost impossible to resist his claim to the authorship", also noting that "Few books have had greater influence in English history". The book purports to be the king's spiritual autobiography. Written in simple, direct, and moving language, it quickly ran through some 47 editions and was translated into several languages. After the Restoration, John Gauden claimed authorship of the book, and this claim is still a subject of scholarly controversy. Because of the favourable image it created of the king, John Milton was assigned by the regicides to reply to it, which he did in his "Eikonoklastes". Almack here provides a detailed account of the printing and publication history and surveys the evidence for authorship, before setting out a very detailed bibliographical catalogue of the various editions. Copy No 13 of the Large Paper copies. Slight wear to head of spine, otherwise Very Good. Seller Inventory # ABE-10558
