About this Item
Volume 39 of this 42 volume series of excellent children's books published from 1957 to the late 1960s. Although published by Doubleday's book club, these are not your typical book club issues. These books are all original, and contain original stories as well as traditional tales and re-tellings of classics. There's also some non-fiction - a look at a foreign country and often a biography of a famous person. Most notable of all was the use of new illustrations by some artists who have since become highly collectable. This volume is a good example, containing a non-fiction piece on space with new illustrations by Richard Scarry. Also contains pictures by Peter Spier, Marguerite De Angeli, Polly Jackson, etc. There's edited selections from "Black Beauty", a Hans Christian Andersen tale, and a look at Belgium. A very good copy. The hinge is just starting to crack at front endpaper, boards are slightly bowed, but a nice copy. Dust jacket is very good, a little browned on spine panel, worn and nicked at top of spine, and with a small stain on rear panel. JS. Seller Inventory # 002580
