FIRST EDITION 1593, Italian text, small 8vo, approximately 165 x 110 mm, 6½ x 4¼ inches, printer's pictorial device on title page, decorated woodcut initials, 1 full page woodcut of a heating apparatus, 2 small ones in the text, leaves: [8], 1-86, [1] - blank, lacking 8 leaves of index and 1 blank. Bound in modern full speckled calf, gilt lettered label to spine, gilt rules and gilt date at foot of spine, new endpapers. Very light browning to title page, 2 tiny ink spots on printer's device, 2 more on pictorial headpiece at the top of Contents table, from page 9-86 the top quarter of the leaf has pale stain with tide mark, otherwise contents clean. Binding tight and firm. A very good copy of a scarce work (lacking index as noted). "The ancient Roman custom of adding ice to drinks was revived in the sixteenth century and caused division among medical practitioners as to the effects of this practice on health.
