Bound in contemporary smooth leather boards with a newer full leather spine laid down. Text in gilt to the spine. 8vo - [iii - xx],1 - 171,[20 Index] pp. The boards are solid though certainly aged. The corners are all rounded and there is some scuffing. The hinges, interior and exterior, remain very solid. A previous long-ago owner, not that handy with a quill, has left some smudges to the Index. Some minor foxing to the first several pages. Two previous owner dated signatures to the front free endpaper. The earlier name, dated 1900, is that of James J[ohnston]. Shaw [1845-1910]. He lived a varied life, first as a Presbyterian Minister, later becoming a Professor of Metaphysics and Ethics at Magee College, Derry. He was called to the Irish Bar in 1878. He joined the faculty at Trinity College, Dublin as the Whately Professor of Political Economy. He held several more impressive positions until finally becoming a County Court Judge of County Kerry. The contents of the book remain clean and easy to read. . With a very good example of the large fold-out map [dated 1743] of County Down executed by Charles Smith. Very Good.
