In the remotest corner (chuckchi art). ~ There is a tendency for the European art~lover to think of art solely in terms of the western tradition, and there could be no more admirable corrective to such a view than this book. Realisation of both the extent and quality of nonEuropean art has been steadily growing. Not only is it valued for itself but it has increasingly influenced European forms. Whether it be Primitive art, Byzantine or the sophisticated Japanese style~all have had a profound effect on western art, especially since the time of the Impressionists. It can almost be claimed that the whole recent revolution in art stems from this influence. However, there is still a great ignorance of the art of Asia. The value of the present book is in the fact that it deals largely with works which are unfamiliar, though of undoubted value and quality, even to those acquainted with Asian art. The book recommends itself on many counts, besides the important one of introducing the reader to whole new fields. It has a wide scope and variety ~ the subject matter ranging from the bronzes of the Luristan shepherds to the bone carvings of the remote Chuckchi. The art of the ten cultural regions dealt with is in each case discussed by an expert and more than 300 pages of superb illustrations enable the reader to get an authentic idea of fine specimens of the product of each culture. Altogether a book which will open up new vistas for the connoisseur, while providing a fascinating insight into unknown or unfamiliar worlds for the art amateur and general reader.
