About this Item
First edition, first impression. The winner of the first Booker Prize. Original orange cloth, lettered black on spine. 8vo. 285pp. Fine in fine dust-wrapper. The d/w has one very slight crease, a little light shelf wear at top edge and a trace of dust marking to rear panel but is in very bright, unfaded, crisp condition. It is not price clipped and displays the original price of 30s £1.50 on inner front flap. Although bearing no ownership markings of any kind, this copy was from the personal library of Peter du Sautoy, the chairman of Faber & Faber. This intelligent thriller, set against the backdrop of war-torn Port Said in 1956 was the inaugural winner of the Booker Prize in 1969. It is scarce and arguably the rarest of all the Booker winners.
