About this Item
First UK Edition. Publisher's blue boards with silver lettering to the spine. Four small pieces of glue residue to the rear paste-down where a newspaper cutting has been removed otherwise a near fine copy. The dustwrapper is price-clipped to the front flap with slight fraying and miniscule loss to the tip and tail of the spine. Great cover art by Roy Sanford. "This bestselling novel has gone into 25 editions in English alone, and inspired a record-breaking Hollywood film. The action-packed story of heroism and sacrifice follows Squadron 633 on a crucial mission--a mission crucial to the success of D-Day. Their target is a Norwegian fjord, where the Germans are developing a top-secret weapon. The pilots know they'll be flying in low, between the steep mountain walls, without fighter support. For many, the trip will be one-way only." (GoodReads). One of the most iconic war-time stories. The basis of the 1964 movie of the same name directed by Walter Grauman and starring Cliff Robertson, George Chakiris and Maria Perschy. The movie was the first Aviation Film to be shot in colour and Panavision widescreen. NB: In the novel, Squadron Leader Roy Grenville was a British character, but was Americanised as Wing Commander Roy Grant for the film. Robertson, a U.S. actor, was cast because he was popular internationally at the time and because an American central character improved the production's access to finance and worldwide audiences. Inexplicably uncommon. Photographs/scans available upon request. Seller Inventory # 355490723278
