A good "libraried" book with typical stampings and attachments to the front endpapers and copyright page. However, there are no edge stampings, and the unclipped dust jacket is "very good" -- in fact, the main value here doubtless lies in the jacket, which is protected in polyester and appears never to have been "glued down." Whether the Oakham Library, of the Rutland County Council Libraries and Museums, still has any claim on this book we can't tell. It was sold to us by a U.K. bulk seller which specializes in clearing ex-library materials, and the book was last checked out in January of 2005 -- more than a decade ago -- so we're going to assume it entered after-market commerce legitimately, though if you fear having the Rutland library system's version of Javert sent after you, you may of course pass on this externally handsome but no-longer-crisp copy. (PLEASE NOTE: By stating "Most of the value here lies in the dust jacket," we mean this jacket might considerably enhance the value of a better-condition, jacketless copy, but that -- absent the jacket -- this ex-library book itself is not worth much. So please don't order this ex-library book and then -- ignoring the value of the jacket -- complain "The book isn't worth much because it's ex-library!") 311 pp. Reduced from $85.

Nice dust jacket has a light vertical crease to front panel along spine, not price clipped, has never been pasted down. Still shows original price of L16.99. Page edges moderately age-browned. This one looks like it was intended for library use but was rescued before it could be all "libraried up." Gray textured boards with no stampings may constitute a "library binding." Some kind of bookplate or card was glued to front pastedown but then removed, leaving some white paper residue in the shape of a hollow rectangle. Previous owner's initials to top corner of FFE in blue ballpoint. Someone wrote to copyright page in ink "F/8008CB", though final character could be an "8" or an "S" -- at any rate the "F" probably designating "Fiction." And a couple of numbers have been rubber-stamped to final page. But there are NO other library attachments or stampings. These oddities noted, we grade the book good-plus in a very good jacket. 311 pp., here reduced from $400.

Page block has a trace of shelfwear to top and bottom. High acid content of the paper has resulted in toning of all pages. On February 23. 2004, the author signed the full title page: Ian Rankin, a.k.a. "Jack!" in Portland, OR. This copy was an uncirculated library book that has had renovation work to successfully remove a slip from 1st free end paper and a pocket on the last free end page. If the end pages were replaced, there would be zero evidence of previous library ownership. The dust jacket is very good with several small punctures to spine area and two closed edge tears to bottom front about 1/2". Otherwise glossy and crisp. Book ships promptly from within USA.
