[Spy thriller] FIRST EDITION. Tall octavo (24 x 16cm), pp.220. Publisher's cloth in pictorial dust-wrapper with original price £11.95 to flap. A fine, fresh copy, virtually as new. Britain's greatest spy returns in John Gardner's eighth original 007 novel. 'Win, Lose or Die' finds Bond back in active service for the Royal Navy, in a covert role on board the flagship aircraft carrier HMS Invincible, where, with the help of a beautiful Russian naval attache, he must once again save the world from a most diabolical plan. From the collection of Ian Fleming bibliographer Otto Penzler, purchased by ourselves at Swann Auctions in 2010, with a pencil note to that effect signed by his bookseller friend and colleague Jon Gilbert. Penzler's Mysterious Press published John Gardner's 1984 novel The Garden of Weapons. A nice association.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. First edition, first printings (1981-89). The first eight new James Bond novels, each inscribed by John Gardner on the title page. For Special Services, Icebreaker, and Role of Honor are review copies with the publisher's promotional material laid in. In 1979, Gildrose Publications (now Ian Fleming Productions) approached Gardner (1926-2007), the respected English thriller novelist, and asked him to revive Ian Fleming's James Bond series of novels. Between 1981 and 1996, Gardner wrote fourteen James Bond novels and the novelizations of two Bond films: License to Kill and GoldenEye. Popular among Bond fans and commercially successful, these novels are also credited with influencing the subsequent Bond films, most notably A View to Kill and The World is Not Enough. Octavo, eight volumes. Uniformly fine, crisp and unread, in fine dust jackets.

As evidenced in the above descriptions, they are all in fine condition, showing no wear aside from some slight rubbing in the earlier titles. Dating between 1968 and 2022, this set encompasses 54 years after the death of James Bond creator, Ian Fleming. Bond lives on where Fleming does not, and we believe he will continue to frequent best seller lists as the centre of the spy thriller genre.
