Le notizie tramandateci su Farid ad-Din 'A??ar, uno dei più celebri poeti mistici persiani, sono scarse e incerte. Visse tra il 1100 e il 1200, in un'epoca in cui il Sufismo era assai praticato e i problemi della metafisica erano oggetto di attiva speculazione. Per un certo tempo esercitò probabilmente la professione di farmacista ('A??ar significa infatti «il venditore di droghe») e, per quanto si sappia ben poco della sua educazione, ebbe sicuramente una conoscenza profonda della musica, dell'astronomia, della medicina e delle teorie delle scuole dell'epoca. Tra le numerose opere che gli vengono attribuite, Il verbo degli uccelli, di cui è accertata l'autenticità, è la più celebre. Costruita secondo un'articolata struttura dialogica che rielabora epistole filosofiche di vari autori antichi (Avicenna, Al-Ghazali), l'opera, più che un poema narrativo in senso stretto, è un libro sapienziale dove l'allegoria del viaggio degli uccelli lascia trasparire e a volte emergere l'intento didascalico. I volatili, riuniti in convegno, scelgono come re il favoloso uccello Simurgh (trasparente simbolo della divinità) e decidono di raggiungere la sua corte. Finalmente partono, ma solo trenta su centomila riescono ad arrivare a destinazione dopo aver attraversato le sette valli lungo cui si snoda la mistica via, una rappresentazione simbolica degli stadi attraverso cui l'anima, con costante progressione, attinge la perfezione divina. Simurgh (il «Trenta uccelli») è in realtà lo specchio di quegli eletti che giungono alla sua corte: l'esplorazione attariana del «mare dell'anima» si compie dunque nella scoperta della sua totale identità con il mare divino. E, come a ribadire l'intenzione didascalica dell'opera, nell'epilogo il poeta esorta i lettori a rileggere più volte i suoi versi, perché «i figli dell'illusione sono naufragati nella musica dei miei versi, ma i figli della realtà hanno saputo penetrare nei miei segreti più intimi».
