Book First Edition
Leipzig, Siegfried Lebrecht Crusius, 1789, 8°, Titelblatt mit Vignette, (14 pp. Vorrede),(4 pp. Inhalt), 292 pp., Halbledereinband d.Zt. Rare First Edition, Hahnemann's fourth work, and important contribution to Venerical Disease. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) was born in Meißen and died in Paris. His father was a porcellan-painter in the famous Meißen - manufacture in Saxony near Dresden. He studied medicine in Vienna and Erlangen. From 1805 on he worked as a physician in Torgau and from 1811 on in Leipzig. After the death of his wife for 42 years he remarried a rich patient, Melanie d'Hervilly. They moved to Paris, where he opened a medical practice until his death at the age of 88. Hahnemann is generally regarded as the founder of homeopathy, a medical doctrine based upon the ancient principle of simila similibus curantur. He believed that a disease could be cured by dosing the patient with specific drugs that, if given to a healthy person, would reproduce the disease's symptoms. This theory is in part a reaction to the rampant overdosing and indiscriminate polypharmacy of his day. The present work predates all of Hahnemann's concepts of homeopathy, a term which he used for the first time in 1807. The book is divided into various chapters dealing with tripper (gonorrhea), venereal warts, bubos, Lustseuche (syphilis), and venereal diseases in newborns. For strictures of the urethra he recommends "ein hornenes Stäbchen" (pin out of horn) and a special "Tripperspritze" (syringe out of tin), which can be seen as a small engraving on the title page. He also invented a special mercury product which had to be given in increasing daily doses. The patient had to develop "Mercurialfieber" with a metallic taste, awful odor, and multiple other physical complaints. Details of this therapy and its side-effects can be read in the careful description by Proksch. Erste Ausgabe. - Bedeutender Pariser Syphilidograph! - Proksch, Geschichte II, 553-556; Hirsch/Hübotter III, 19-21; Hirsch/Hübotter III, 819 (Loder); Haehl I, 72, II, 24 Schmidt 19.
